about

Written by Andy Hudson and performed with Emma Winston of Owl and Mouse, and Darren Hayman's The Long Parliament.

lyrics

Twenty years, for twenty years
Snow falls, continually and endlessly
I’d trace my steps through country paths
Where snow falls, I’d carefully and tentatively
Navigate the lanes and back again
My solitary steps so delicate
Imperfectly from left to right
And gradually the snow each night
Erased my prints along the path

The distant lights of Montreal
Where night falls, but only if you want it to
You left me here, twenty years
Where snow falls, infinitely, silently
The footprints in the snow are mine alone
So picture my surprise to recognise
Fresh footprints in snow that matched your size and stride
They stopped abruptly, in mid-step
I had no choice, retrace the prints and follow the trail

I ran through the pathways
I followed the prints
The snow kicked round my feet like flakes of polystyrene packaging
I ran through the village
I slipped on the ice
I fell into the arms of someone that I thought was surely you
And how I hoped it was you but the trail went cold

I raced through the pavements
I ran the red lights
I couldn’t feel the cold or hear my heart beat fast with every stride
I clinged to the corners
I sprinted the straits
I saw the sillouette of someone that I thought was surely you
And how I hoped it was you

And after twenty years of silence
Twenty years full of endless snow and
Twenty years, now the trail has disappeared
And I’m so far from home
My boots are soaked and suddenly I feel the cold
Surrounding me like never before

I step so carefully so delicately
Footprints in snow, footprints in perfect snow
I tread so carefully so delicately
Footprints in snow, footprints in endless, perfect snow
